Eviction drive in Dhubri

By Correspondent

GOLAKGANJ, Feb 25 The Dhubri district administration on Tuesday launched a drive to evict encroachers from roadsides, pavements and government land in the town. The drive was launched after the expiry of the deadline given to clear encroachment. The district administration aired messages on loudspeakers on February 20 to clear all encroachments within three days.

Officials of the Dhubri Circle Office, along with the police and paramilitary forces, undertook the drive from the Deputy Commissioners office to Caltex More near the Dhubri Girls College. The vendors alleged that they were being evicted even after payment of taxes to the Dhubri Municipal Board.

There are around 1,050 vendors in the five markets of Dhubri town, sources said. Abu Lais Choudhury, Circle Officer, Dhubri, said they wanted to clear the encroachment without any hassles, but force would be used if the situation demanded so.
