GUWAHATI, July 10 - City-based anti-superstition voluntary group Ellora Vigyan Mancha yesterday organised a workshop on application of science in the kitchen for the benefit of the people.
The topic of the workshop was � selection of food items, application of simple scientific approaches while preparing food items, maintaining hygiene in the kitchen, use of safe drinking water, among others, stated a press release.
Emphasis was also laid on the traditional food items which are cheaper and effective in fighting anaemia, food poisoning, superstitions related with food items and food habits, etc.
Inaugurating the function, Mancha president and noted botanist Dr Chandra Mohan Sarma said superstitions have not spared even our kitchens. But with the application of some elementary scientific concepts, one can prepare food items nutritiously, he said.
Thirty persons took part in the workshop and they were selected from amongst high school level students. These trainees will help the common people, especially the illiterate and poor women of their localities, to learn scientific cooking practices and select cheaper but nutritious food.
Dr Kailash Bhattacharyya, Head, Dept of Bio-Chemistry, GMCH, gynaecologist Dr Anita Ray Saha, paediatrician Dr Amritlal Saha, Head of the Dept of Physics of North Guwahati College Tapan Kumar Sarma and Prof Juli Bardoloi, were the resource persons.
Gauhati Medical College Vice Principal Dr Jaydev Sarma and Assam Science Society secretary Dr Jaydeep Baruah also addressed the participants.
