GUWAHATI, Dec 19 � Assam has an exclusive brand in the form of its orthodox tea to earn hard currency in the global market. It has the potential to earn between Rs 700 and Rs 7,000 per kg. Among the orthodox brand of teas, the Assam Tippy Orthodox is regarded to be the best and it fetches premium price in the world market because of its unique taste and flavour.
Chairman of the North Eastern Tea Association Bidyananda Barkakoty laid stress on securing the European Geographical Indication (GI) for the Assam Orthodox tea for its better prospect in the global market. Assam Orthodox has already secured the Indian GI and the European GI will help it fetch much higher price. As, this will boost its demand in the global market, said Barkakoty.
Barkakoty pleaded with the Chief Minister and Industries Minister of the State for steps to secure the European GI for the Assam Orthodox tea.
It needs mention here that the orthodox tea of the Duflating Tea Estate (TE) was sold at a record price of Rs 6999 per kg at the Kolkata Tea Auction Centre about 3 months back.
