Erratic water supply in city locality

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 27 Though the government has chalked out the most modern plans on paper for development of the capital city Guwahati, the ground realities in many parts of the city present the picture in contrast.

Water supply has been a major problem for the people of Nabagiri locality in Chandmari area of the city. Like in many parts of Guwahati, citizens are worst hit by irregular water supply in the area.

Our area is supposed to get water supply from the water supply wing of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) every alternate day. But, due to reasons best known to the authorities, this locality faces acute water crisis due to erratic supply, general secretary of Nabagiri Unnayan Samity Inamuddin Ahmed said.

The local people also complained that they do not get water for three-four days at a stretch, which badly affects their everyday activities.

Nabagiri is a big locality covering both plains and hilly areas. However, despite paying their municipal taxes regularly, the citizens do not get proper civic facilities that include water supply and conservancy services, a local said.

People also complained that old water pipelines are a major problem that needs immediate attention from the authorities.

Most of the pipelines in our area are very old and need frequent repairing, that again affects the water supply. We have urged the authorities several times to discard the old and decaying pipelines and install new ones to improve the condition, Anil Roy Chowdhury, a senior citizen of the area said.
