MORIGAON, April 25 - Erosion by the Brahmaputra took a serious turn at Lahorighat and Bhuragaon revenue circles in Morigaon district during the last two days, thereby threatening the very existence of two villages, namely Kathoni and Dighaliati.
Unabated erosion by the Brahmaputra forced the concerned villagers to shift their homes and hearth to safer places. As many as 59 families were rendered homeless due to river bank erosion in the aforementioned areas.
It may be mentioned here that the protection dyke of the Water Resource Department along the bank of the Brahmaputra at Kathoni point has been threatened by erosion.
On the other hand, under Bhuragaon Revenue Circle, as many as 100 families were adversely affected at Dighali due to erosion. As the 15-km dyke from Bhuragaon to Baralimari has remained open, flood and erosion may create catastrophe in the areas this year. Apart from destruction of human habitation, flood and erosion has damaged several thousand hectares of cropland last year. Several LP school buildings, naamghars and primary health centres were submerged by the Brahmaputra since thae last three years during the annual deluge.
If permanent flood and erosion protection measures are not taken, the entire Bhuragaon circle will be wiped out from the map of Morigaon district in the near future.
