Erosion poses threat to Kalaigaon-Adarshagaon road

By Correspondent

KALAIGAON, June 8 - River Noa has always been wreaking havoc during the annual floods in and around Kalaigaon town. Although several schemes have been implemented from time to time by the authority concerned to stop flood-induced river bank erosion, nothing special has been done as yet to stop erosion by river Noa at no. 2 Kalaigaon.

Severe erosion by the river has already engulfed more than 25 bighas of land during the last five years. Embankment construction and boulder-pitching activities have failed miserably, thereby posing a severe threat of washing away the Kalaigaon-Adarshagaon road at no. 2 Kalaigaon. Unabated erosion has also posed threat to Kanaklata Das Bio-diversity Park.

The road under reference could be washed away at any moment if more flood-induced erosion is not checked. The river is also likely to change its course at no. 2 Kalaigaon, thereby causing damage to houses and properties of many. Several lakhs of rupees have already been spent last year in the name of protection of the road. However, lack of scientific planning and substandard work of the embankment and boulder pitching has not served any purpose so far.

The flood-affected people of no. 2 Kalaigaon have, therefore, demanded immediate action to stop further erosion by the river, besides repair of the damaged embankment, i.e., where it had been breached last year.

The concerned people of Kalaigaon have urged BTC EM Jagadish Sarkar to immediately adopt preventive measures so as to protect the Kalaigaon-Adarshagaon road, which is severely threatened.
