Erosion poses threat to Cachar residents

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, June 22 - Since the past many years, people of Bagpur Part-II area on the edge of river Barak in Sonai constituency of Cachar district are spending their days under constant threat because of unabated riverbank erosion.

After the recent spell of flood, the residents living around 500 metres away from the erosion-prone area are in jeopardy of losing their land and livelihood as the area has become extremely vulnerable.

Already, five houses have been lost to the river due to unabated erosion spread across the area. Further, atleast 15 more houses are on the verge of being swept away any moment.

The incomplete bridge at Sonabarighat is obviously adding to the woes of the people. We have made repeated appeals before the Government, which have fallen on deaf ears, as no remedial action has been forthcoming till date, echoed the locals. Sonai MLA Aminul Haque Laskar told The Assam Tribune today that the incomplete bridge has become a real cause of concern for the people. He assured to visit the erosion site on Saturday.

I am aware of the situation and will do everything possible within my power to protect the lives of the people there. The bridge too must be completed, he said.
