Erosion forces schools to keep on shifting

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, July 5 - Erosion by rivers in Lakhimpur district has affected schools and academic sessions of hundreds of students. This has been witnessed on the riverside areas of the district under Narayanpur Development Block in Dhalpur where the changing landscape of the river banks due to constant erosion has forced some schools to shift from one place to another.

Massive and continuous erosion by the Luit stream of the Brahmaputra at Jamuguri Gaon Panchayat area in Dhalpur within Lakhimpur district has affected five schools under Narayapur Elementary Education Block since 2011.

The schools are Bokaduwar LP School, Bokaduwar ME School, Borati LP School, Chelek LP School and KP Mishing LP School. These schools, which have been affected by erosion, had to as shift as many as ten times within the last 15 years. Permanent buildings of these schools have been dismantled and shifted to different places on the river bank as erosion is changing the landscape constantly. This has not only affected the public in general, but also the school-going children.
