Eradicate poverty to tackle Maoists: Patnaik

TINSUKIA, April 24 � Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik has called for eradication of poverty in order to put Maoist activities in the State at bay.

The Governor, who attended a meeting at Circuit House here, stated that undeveloped areas must develop on all fronts, cautioning that otherwise Maoists, who always capitalised on the poverty of the people, would try to spread their tentacles in those areas.

In this context he made a special refernce to Sadiya subdivision, which is still lagging behind in developmental matters, and called for its speedy progress in order to curb Maoist activities in the subdivision.

At the meeting, Patnaik launched a van for carrying agricultural products and power tillers under schemes of the District Rural Development Agency. He also distributed some other equipment under the aegis of the agriculture department. He released a ready reckoner of development schemes (in Assamese) and survey report on tea garden areas of Tinsukia district. Digboi MLA Rameswer Dhanwar, RP Singh and Raju Sahu, both Parliamentary Secretaries, Deputy Commissioner, SS Meenakshi Sundaram and other top government officers, besides dignitaries were present at the function.

The Governor is scheduled to visit Chapakhowa in Sadiya tomorrow.
