Engleng new CEM of KAAC

DIPHU, Jan 20 � Joyram Engleng was today elected as the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. In the event of two nominations, one filed by Horen Sing Bey backed by PAPA and the other Joyram Engleng of the Congress, the decision was arrived at through secret ballot.

The session started at twelve noon and chairman Rupsing Teron conducted the election process. A total of 25 votes were cast. Joyram Engleng received 16 votes, PAPA nominee Horen Sing Bey could garner the support of nine elected MACs. In addition to PAPA�s eight elected members, one Independent member extended support to PAPA, raising its tally to 9.

Bey was the first person to congratulate the new CEM. Jagat Sing Engti and a few other PAPA members stressed on the need of implementing the UPDS accord on priority basis in their opening remarks after the election of the CEM.

Engleng, in his reply, said, �Starting from the MoU, now we are duty-bound to implement the MoS signed between the government and UPDS, but the Congress has always insisted that to overcome the burning problems of Karbi Anglong and bringing lasting and peaceful implementation of the Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution is a must. In the 184th session of KACC, we passed a resolution demanding fulfilment of the same and we will persist on that demand.�

Later, while talking with the media, the new CEM said that �bringing peace and development will be my priority. Soon the list of the executive committee will be prepared and portfolios will be allocated to the new Executive Members�.

The name of the elected CEM and list of the executive members will be sent to the Governor of Assam through the Hills Area Development Department for formal approval; later the new EC will send the list of 4 nominated MAC to the Governor for his approval.
