Emulate Kerala Govt, save paper mills: Sushmita urges Patowary

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Nov 30 - In the backdrop of the liquidation move of the closed paper mills under the Hindustan Paper Corporation by the NCLT, the All India Mahila Congress chief and former Silchar MP Sushmita Dev has asked the Commerce and Industries Minister Chandra Mohan Patowari to emulate the Government of Kerala and revive the mills at the earliest.

In a letter sent to the Minister on Saturday, Sushmita said, despite agitations by the unions of the HPC and also by the Opposition, there has been no step initiated towards saving the mills from going into liquidation. The Government of Kerala has taken timely steps to take over the Kerala Newsprint Project (KNP), also a unit of the HPC in the greater interest of the people. The Government of Kerala is in the process of taking over the land and has offered Rs 25 crore to purchase shares of the company that owns the KNP. However, in sharp contrast, the Assam Government has shown complete disregard towards the government-run mills and is least bothered about the thousands of bighas of land going to private entities, if and when the mills under HPC get liquidated.

The All India Mahila Congress president has urged the Minister to step up and examine the allotment of land and save the industries failing which it would be clear that the Assam Government is a part of the greater design of the Central Government to sell all public sector undertakings.
