Emergency meeting held after JE outbreak

SHILLONG, Aug 17 - Meghalaya Health Minister AL Hek today convened an emergency meeting with senior officials of the department after the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis and subsequent death of three persons in Garo Hills.

Hek called the meeting to review the situation in Garo Hills where the outbreak of the disease has been reported. The Minster added that the Health department is fully prepared to tackle the disease and Health officials have been instructed to create awareness and also assist those requiring medical assistance.

Recently three people, including a BSF jawan have died after being inflicted by JE. The outbreak of the disease has been reported in Ampati, South West Garo Hills.

Last Friday, South West Garo Hills, the Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh has also convened an emergent meeting with the district officials, Nokmas (traditional heads), NGOs, local leaders and senior citizens, to take stock of the situation.

The District Veterinary Officer has been directed to test pigs and check the pig sties and pens across the district, Health officials informed.
