Emergency management exercise conducted

GUWAHATI, June 13 - The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kamrup Metro, conducted a Gaon Panchayat Emergency Management Exercise (GPEMEx) in 14 gaon panchayats (GP) of three revenue circles under Kamrup Metro district on Monday.

The basic objective of the exercise was to build a participatory approach and involve the community in disaster management work.

It was also intended to highlight the response capabilities of various responding agencies like SDRF, NGOs and grassroots level functionaries.

The exercise in the 14 GPs started with events among children like art competition, quiz competition, debate and extempore speech.

Public meetings on topics like disaster preparedness, water-body conservation, open space and green space preservation were also held in all the 14 GPs.

Streetplays were conducted as well as demonstration on fire safety, flood preparedness and first aid. Mock drill on earthquake and fire safety was the highlight of the event.

Over 7,000 participants comprising students, teachers, civil society organisations, members of village land management committees and people from the community were involved in the exercise in all the 14 GPs.
