Emergency management exercise begins in Cachar

SILCHAR, June 13 - In sync with the rest of the Gaon Panchayats in the State, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) along with Cachar District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and local NGOs, including Chotto Prochesta began the �Gaon Panchayat- Level Emergency Management Exercise (GP-EMEx)� across 163 Gaon Panchayats under five development circles of Cachar district on Monday.

As a part of the programme, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted a mock drill at the Ramani Mohan High School under Berenga Gaon Panchayat in the presence of Cachar Deputy Commissioner S Viswanathan.

Speaking on the ocassion, Viswanathan stressed on increasing awareness on how to combat disaster and its preparedness. In his words, � the impact of natural calamities can be lessened through proper application of disaster preparatory measures. The exercise on disaster preparedness were carried out across 2,202 Gaon Panchayats in the State and Central Government agencies are extending total support to the cause.�

Shamim Ahmed Laskar, District Project Officer of DDMA, Cachar, claimed this to be a first of its kind initiative which aims to take forward the Swacch Bharat campaign by generating mass awareness on local issues, including environment will be highlighted through this initiative.

ADC-cum-CEO of DDMA, Cachar, Rajib Roy along with Kishore Dutta, an officer from ASDMA and other officials and NGO representatives were also present on the ocassion.
