JALUKBARI, Oct 3 - Sensation prevails in an around Mikirpara near Deepor Beel after a herd of wild elephants strayed into the village in search of food last night.

The pachyderms entered the farms of some villagers and destroyed banana plantations, coconut palms, vegetable, betel nut trees and then went into the Deepor Beel, said sources. The forest department posted men there to monitor the movement of the elephants as there are chances of their venturing back into the village, the sources added.

A local youth of the area told The Assam Tribune over phone that the forest department with the help of locals, is keeping a close watch on the herd of elephants.

We request the administration to deploy more forest personnel who are well equipped and well trained in chasing away elephants. This is a common but frightening state of affairs in the area. Fortunately no human life was lost during the development, the youth added.
