IMPHAL, Nov 25 - Former MLA and newly elected BJP candidate from Thangmeiband Assembly constituency Khumukcham Joykishan on Wednesday stated that he is ready to work for the welfare of the public.

Speaking to media here, Kh Joykishan, the then Trinamool Congress MLA said, I will continue to to be an important opposition member in the Assembly as the party I belong is in power at the Centre.

By-election in the two Manipur Assembly constituencies was necessitated after the Speakers Tribunal disqualified two MLAs Kh Joykishan of Thangmeiband and Th Biswajit of Thongju under the Anti-Defection Law on May 28 this year.

Meanwhile, in a post-poll violence that took place at Khongman area in Manipurs Imphal East district on Tuesday afternoon, around eight persons were injured and hospitalised after armed guards stationed at UNNACO, a financial institution which runs a school at Khongman area in Manipurs Imphal East district, allegedly opened fire on supporters of the winning BJP candidate Th Biswajit, reports said.

About half a dozen vehicles mostly two wheelers parked inside the institution were also reportedly set on fire during the incident.
