Educationists harp on learning through mother tongue

By Correspondent

KAZIRANGA, Aug 18 - Language plays a very vital role in giving shape to a community and its culture. Any regional language or a mother tongue always facilitates in imparting concept-based knowledge and helps in binding together different communities.

The above were the views expressed by many educationists while appreciating the modalities of the new National Education Policy, 2020.

Speaking to this correspondent, Mina Saikia, Lecturer of DIET, Golaghat, said that any constructive learning for a child always begins from his or her own language or mother tongue, which enhances their capacity-building. This is why the government has also made it mandatory for a child to learn through the mother tongue upto Class-V in every school across the country.

Saikia rued the fact that many students in Assam due to a lack of initiative from some parents ignore their mother tongue and prefer only rote learning which may fetch them good marks, but only for a short period like say upto Class-V or VI. But after reaching Class-VI, the students are required to learn many topics through understanding, analysis and expansion, which will be possible only if their learning is concept-based through their mother tongue or a regional language during the initial phase. Otherwise, there will only be downfall in their learning further in schools.

She said that if a child whose mother tongue is Assamese, studies through it in school, an interest will be kindled in his mind to read Assamese literature or any language literature which will ultimately help in inculcating good moral values. Many literatures like Ramayana etc., speak about inculcating important values which can help the young generation make themselves socially responsible and acceptable citizens in their future life.

Udayan Phukan, Headmaster of Kaziranga High School said that the new system of education, (5+3+3+4 ) system in new National Education Policy, 2020 would definitely help the students to compete in a better way as their learning process will be concept based upto Class-V through their mother tongue.

Narayan Bhatta Rai of Kohora, a guardian said that the new National Education Policy will definitely help children if they need to study abroad. He observed that times have changed, and hence our education system must have the required flexibility. This flexibility is now mentioned in the new education policy and this will only help the students later on in building a strong nation.

Chandan Gogoi, another guardian from Kohora, while appreciating the new National Education Policy, said that the future of our country will be bright as many talented students will now be able to nurture and show their innate talents.
