Economic blockade against Nagaland reimposed

By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, Nov 27 - Various organizations that have been imposing an economic blockade against Nagaland at the New Sonowal BOP near Assam-Nagaland border at Mariani-Mokokchung Road since November 15 and had withdrawn it temporarily for 36 hours from 6 am of Wednesday, have reimposed the blockade after expiry of the time period on 6 pm on Thursday.

The protesting organizations, which included State level and local ones, resorted to the blockade after the Deputy Commissioner and SP-level meeting of Jorhat and Mokokchung districts held on Wednesday at Jorhat to discuss the ongoing inter-State boundary stand-off between the two States failed to break the deadlock as Nagaland side didnt commit to remove the temporary police camp set up inside Dissoi Valley Reserve Forest within Assam land.

The protesters had temporarily suspended the stir against the neighbouring State as a goodwill gesture in view of the peace talks between the district administrations of the two States.

A Titabar subdivisional administration official, when contacted on Friday, said that members of different organizations that were earlier carrying out an economic blockade against Mokokchung district (Nagaland) reimposed the blockade since Thursday night after the talks held between the two district administration of Jorhat and Mokokchung failed to yield any positive results.

It may be mentioned here that the Mokokchung district administration had urged the Jorhat administration to get the economic blockade lifted as stopping the supply of goods impacts Mokokchung and its adjoining districts of Nagaland in view of the fact that most of the bulk of all kinds of commodities, including food and other essentials, are procured and transported from Jorhat wholesale market to districts of Nagaland bordering Assam.

Whenever there is a flaring up of tension along the Assam-Nagaland boundary due to alleged encroachment of Assam land by Nagaland side or driver/ handyman of trucks transporting commodities to the hill State are beaten up badly when they fail to pay up money to Naga goons or militants, often economic blockade is restored to by organizations of Assam.
