Economic blockade against Manipur called off

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Aug 24 - The indefinite economic blockade by the North East Peoples Organisation (NEPO) against the uninterrupted harassment of non-Manipuris in general in the wake of demand for introduction of Inner Line Permit (ILP) raised by the Joint Committee on ILP was temporarily withdrawn from 5 pm on Monday following the assurance from the Cachar district administration of action to be taken by the State Government.

Sadhan Purkayastha, working president of the NEPO, said, the ongoing harassment meted out to the non-Manipuris in Manipur is intolerable. We are calling off the blockade with the hope that the State Government will speak to its counterpart to put an end to the harassment to the people. He, however, informed that the day the issue of ILP will be raised in the Manipur Assembly, the people led by the NEPO would observe black day in the Barak Valley.

It is to be mentioned that ADC Baranya Das and other officials spoke to the protesters at Jirighat and assured that the issue has been communicated to the State Government for talks with the Manipur Government. The Union Home Ministry has been informed about the developments, they said. -
