EC to keep �close eye� on expenditure during polls

AGARTALA, Dec 29 - Expenditure observers will keep a close eye on the expenditure of the candidates as well as the contesting parties during the election process to the Tripura Assembly.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sriram Tarinikanta informed this to the media on Friday. The candidates and the political parties will have to spend money during the electioneering as per the guidelines issued by the Election Commission, he added.

A candidate contesting the Assembly elections, could spend a maximum limit of Rs 20 lakh. However, there is no upper limit for a party contesting the Assembly elections. But it will have to maintain statement of expenditure in prescribed way laid down by Election Commission.

Claiming that preparation of final photo electoral rolls has been making good progress, the CEO said all the complaints are being verified. �In course of revision of electoral rolls, 28,000 names of voters were deleted after carrying out an exercise. Of the total deleted voters, 21,000 are dead while remaining 7,000 were removed on various grounds that includes shifted voters�, he pointed out.

As many as 47 polling stations have been created for voter convenience. With this, the number of polling booths have increased to 3,214.

On the facilities for those who are living beyond the Indo-Bangla fencing, the CEO said there will be all efforts to ensure that voters having EPIC could cast their votes.
