EC defers Kanubari bye-election

ITANAGAR, May 14 - The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday deferred the May 16 bye-election to Kanubari Assembly seat in Arunachal Pradesh �honouring� the Supreme Court�s directions to �maintain status quo� in response to a Review Petition in Wanglam Sawin versus Speaker, Arunachal Pradesh and others filed before the Apex Court.

The Supreme Court has passed an order dated May 11 in the said review petition to the effect that the matter will be heard on July 11 next. In the meantime, status quo shall be maintained.

�After considering the matter and having due regard to the order of the Supreme Court, the Election Commission has decided to defer the poll in the said bye-election,� said a press note from the EC.

Now, the date of poll in Kanubari (ST) Assembly constituency will be fixed after the disposal of the Review Petition by the Supreme Court, the release said.
