EC appoints Ashish Kundra as Mizoram CEO

By CORRESPONDENT

AIZAWL, Nov 15 - The Election Commission (EC) today removed SB Shashank as the Chief Electoral Officer of Mizoram and replaced him with Ashish Kundra. Shashank will, however, be attached to the EC.

The appointment of the new CEO comes 13 days ahead of the election to the 40-member Mizoram Assembly, scheduled for November 28.

Shashank has been removed in the wake of massive protests by influential NGOs in the State following his spat with Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, Principal Secretary to the State Home Department.

The protests came after Shashank alleged interference by Chuaungo during preparations for the State polls. He wrote to the EC in the last week of October, complaining against the active role played by the State Home Department in making the interference.

Following his complaint, Chuaungo, a 1987-batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer, was transferred. Massive protests were held against Chuaungos removal on November 6. The protesters also demanded Shashanks removal from the State. Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding Shashank's removal.

A day later, Shashank left the State after being summoned by the Chief Election Commissioner to Delhi, which resulted in the withdrawal of the agitation.

At the suggestion of the EC, the Mizoram Government proposed three names for the CEOs post including those of Lalhmingthanga, H Lalengmawia and K Lalthawmmawia.

The EC on Monday sought two more names from the Mizoram Government.

The EC rejected the three names earlier suggested by the State Government. As per the EC instructions, the State Government proposed two more names this week, election officials said, adding that Ashish Kundras name was suggested.

PTI adds: The Election Commissions move to replace Shashank on Thursday was welcomed by political parties as well as the civil societies that had spearheaded the movement to seek the poll officers ouster.

We welcome anybody as the State CEO except Shashank, who was working against the interests of the Mizo people by making an all-out effort to register Bru voters in the Tripura relief camps without following established procedures, Vanlalruata, chairman of the committee, said.

Hailing the poll panels decision, Lallianchhunga, the spokesperson of the ruling Congress, said the EC took the right decision by removing Shashank.

The Mizo National Front (MNF) said it was happy with the choice made by the EC. Shashank was causing problems in the State and his removal was the need of the hour, MNF leader Zosangliana said.
