East Zone Inter-Sainik Schools meet begins

GUWAHATI, July 12 - One of the prestigious inter-school games and sports championships of the Sainik Schools, the �East Zone Inter-Sainik School Sports and Co-Curricular Championship 2016-17� got off with its formal opening ceremony on Tuesday at Sainik School Goalpara (SSG), Assam.

Clad in colourful sports gear, 288 cadet participants from four Sainik Schools namely, Sainik School Imphal, Sainik School Punglwa, Nagaland, Sainik School Purulia, West Bengal and the host school displayed a spectacular march past which was followed by oath taking by the team captains and officials.

The event was attended by Lt Gen Konsam Himalaya Singh, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, Commandant of Infantry School, Mhow, Madhya Pradesh and an alumnus of SSG and the first officer from the North-East to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. Speaking on the occasion, the General, who was the chief guest at the function, exhorted the participants to put in their best to keep their school flags flying high. The General also cherished the memories of his days as a cadet at SSG. He urged the cadets of his alma mater to exploit every opportunity provided by the school in the best possible way and strive hard for excellence in the future.

Captain (IN) Edwin Jothirajan, principal, felicitated the chief guest during the regimental lunch hosted in Sam Manekshaw Cadets� Mess in his honour.

The tournament includes titles for football (juniors and sub-juniors), volleyball, hockey, basketball and co-curricular events viz. English and Hindi Debate, quiz and variety of entertainment programme. The closing ceremony is scheduled on July 16.
