AIZAWL, July 5 - A newly-formed committee, Save Sinlung Hills Council Committee, today objected to the MNF Governments extension of the interim period of the Sinlung Hills Council by four more months, and demanded early polls to the council.
The Sinlung Hills Council was set up on July 9 last year following the peace accord between the Congress-led Mizoram Government and the erstwhile underground outfit, Hmar Peoples Convention (Democratic) or HPC(D).
After the interim councils term ended on January 9 this year, the newly-constituted MNF Government extended it by another six months till July 8.
Whereas the people under the council are eagerly looking forward to elections to the council, the Mizoram Government has extended it by another four months, which is deemed as undemocratic, Lalremruata Varte, convener of the committee, said.
The committee comprises leaders of the HPC(D) who signed the agreement with the Mizoram Government last year. It also alleged that the MNF Government appointed its own people as members of the Sinlung Hills Council when it extended the interim period earlier this year.
