Dumper carrying toxic waste seized

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Sept 6 - A dumper (AS01 BC 7392) laden with toxic waste materials proceeding from Khanapara to Patarkuchi was seized at 10th Mile, Jorabat, by personnel of MV checkpost.

R Kalita, enforcement inspector of 10th Mile MV checkpost, took cognizance of the case and forwarded the vehicle to the DTO (Kamrup).

Kalita said that they got a written complaint from one Paban Rahang, a resident of Malaybari under Khetri PS that while he was driving his car, the driver of the dumper which was carrying the toxic, stinking, unhygienic waste material collected after cleaning the drains at Khanapara, drove carelessly, causing the waste to fall on him and his car and also on the highway.

The complainant said the smell of the waste was unbearable and it ought to have been properly covered before transportation on the road. Otherwise, it amounted to a serious public hazard, he added.

The MV official said the waste carried must be safely taken and adequately covered so that the public do not have to be exposed to such filth and smell. As the dumper did not adhere to the prescribed norms for carrying such waste materials, the vehicle was seized by the authorities.

Kalita said that such vehicles often move on the road violating norms, but since no complaint is received, it is difficult to take action against them.
