DIBRUGARH, June 20 � Following stiff opposition from All Assam Students� Union (AASU) over conducting of entrance examinations by Dibrugarh University (DU) for admissions to various professional courses, the varsity authorities after thorough debate on the issue decided to consider both merit (70%) and entrance test marks (30%) for admissions. However, this will be conducted only on experimental basis.
The decision to this effect was reached yesterday evening during the second marathon meeting at Dibrugarh University between the AASU leaders, Assam College Teachers� Association (ACTA), Dibrugarh University Affiliated College Principal�s body, officials of the University Academic Council, entrance test committee, Dr KK Deka, Vice-Chancellor and Registrar, MN Dutta.
The students� body was opposed to holding entrance test for admissions to the varsity on the argument that degree examinations conducted by the varsity would have no value. AASU led by its advisor Sammujjal Bhattacharyya had demanded that merit of the student should be considered for admissions.
Dr KK Deka, Vice-Chancellor told The Assam Tribune that the system would be withdrawn next year in the event of failure to achieve the desired objective. �The purpose behind conducting entrance test for admission is to bring about quality enhancement. �If the system proves to be good, we will hold discussions again to see if it can be implemented as a regulation,� the Vice-Chancellor said.
Dibrugarh University has further decided to conduct the entrance test in ten centres. The test will be conducted in all district headquarters, besides Majuli, Jonai and Sadiya or Doomdooma.
