DU D Litt. to Nagen Saikia, Achyuta Samanta

DIBRUGARH, Dec 18 - The Executive Council of Dibrugarh University has proposed to confer the D Litt. honoris causa on eminent educationist Prof Achyuta Samanta of Odisha and noted writer Dr Nagen Saikia of the State for their invaluable contribution to the fields of academics, literature and public life.

Prof Achyuta Samanta, a Gusi laureate and a man of high repute, has made outstanding contribution in school, higher, professional, and health education by establishing the multi-disciplinary university Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), which is home to 25,000 poorest-of-the-poor indigenous aborigine children who get free accommodation, food, healthcare and education from kindergarten to post-graduation (KG to PG), besides the KIIT International School (KIS) and the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a medical college with a 2,000-bed hospital.

Professor Nagen Saikia is a retired faculty of the Department of Assamese, Dibrugarh University, former Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, an eminent writer, journalist and former president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha. Among several others, he is also a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award, besides several other awards and honours for his contribution to literature.

The eminent personalities will be honoured during the XV Convocation of Dibrugarh University on January 2, 2016.
