DSP, 2 others injured in mob attack

MANGALDAI, Feb 28 � Three persons, including a senior police official, were injured when a mob, protesting the beating up of four persons last night by Village Defence Party (VDP) suspecting them to be cattle thieves, pelted stones at police which opened fire to quell the mob in Darrang district, reports PTI.

The stone pelting at Rajghat in the district, caused injuries to Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) Deba Ranjan Sarma, police said. The mob also damaged cars and burnt tyres on the roads, they said.

After a lathicharge failed to control the situation, the police fired, injuring two persons. The police claimed that rubber bullets were fired.

The two injured � Moinur Ali and Nizamur Ali � were referred to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, they added.

Our Mangaldai Correspondent adds: A district-level peace meeting, held at the DC�s Office and attended by various local non-political, ethnic, political bodies, unanimously resolved to end violence in the district.

The meeting addressed, among others, by Fisheries and I&PR Minister Basanta Das, Deputy Commissioner MS Manivannan and Superintendent of Police Dr GV Shiv Prasad, discussed issues relating to restoring peace in the district following violence during the 12-hour Darrang bandh called in protest against the Udmari-Kalaigaon incident.

Meanwhile, the attack on two local electronic media scribes � Gagan Saharia and Pranjal Mahanta � by the bandh supporters created sharp reactions among several organisations.
