IMPHAL, Aug 18 - In one of the biggest seizure of drugs in recent times, a team of Assam Rifles has recovered approximately 1.3 kg of Brown Sugar and 1,30,000 numbers of World is Yours (WY) Amphetamine tablets costing about Rs 12 crore from L Youjang village at Moreh, a commercial border town of Manipur, according to Assam Rifles sources.
�Acting on specific input from Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Imphal, regarding presence of contraband in a house at L Youjang village, the Assam Rifles team launched a search operation and located the suspected house on August 16,�said PRO Assam Rifles (South) in a press release.
The house owner Thangminlen Haokip was not found in the house at the time of search. On thorough checking of the house, the search team found 1.3 kg of Brown Sugar and 1,30,000 numbers of WY tablets weighing around 12.5 kgs. The approximate market value of the seized items is Rs 12 crore. The recovered drugs were handed over to DRI Imphal, it said.
Since March 2018, Assam Rifles has seized drugs worth around Rs 65 crore from Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar.
Contraband gold:Eighteen contraband gold pieces weighing more than three kilograms and valued around Rs 1.06 crore were seized from five alleged smugglers in Manipur from two different locations around Imphal, Customs officials said on Saturday.
In the first incident, four persons who were travelling to Dimapur in a passenger Tata Winger, were arrested from Koirengei Bazar in the outskirts of the city along the Imphal-Dimapur Highway on Friday for allegedly trying to smuggle 16 gold pieces worth Rs 94.55 lakh from their shoes and bags, said N Meiraba, Superintendent of Imphal Customs Division�s anti-smuggling unit. The gold pieces weighing 3.206 kg appeared to be of �foreign origin� were to be smuggled from Imphal to Dimapur and further to Mumbai by train, the officer said.
The four � identified as Sanjay Kumar Krishnani(32), Jayram Parbati Manglani (40), Harish Nanikram Shringi(44), all from Ulhasnagar, Thane district of Maharashtra and Umesh Laxmandas Darda(32)from Aurangabad, Maharashtra were arrested,� said the Customs officer.
Simultaneously, officials of the same Customs unit seized two gold pieces weighing 399.9 grams and valued at Rs 11.79 lakh from one alleged smuggler from North AOC area here on Friday, the officer said.
The arrested person Dilip Rajkumar Laljani(29), also from Ulhasnagar, had concealed the two gold pieces in his rectum, he added.
Stating that the collective weight of the seized precious metal came up to 3.6 kg and valued at Rs 1.06 crore, the SP Customs division, �Cases have been registered and investigation is on.� With Saturday�s seizure, Imphal Customs Division�s anti-smuggling unit has so far seized Rs 8 crore worth contraband gold weighing around 30 kg and booked 22 individuals since April 1 till date.
