Drug addiction spreading among men in Army

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, July 7 - The drug distribution network in the State Capital here has spread far and wide and even the Indian Army stationed here is finding itself vulnerable to this menace.

According to officials, the fight against drug mafias has to be intensified as drug addiction is spreading among different strata of the population, including men in the Indian Army.

Different varieties of drugs are being distributed by the drug mafias which include Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Heroin, Opium, Ganja and others. Officials said some of the vulnerable areas in the city include Polo, Madanriting and other areas.

The Army finds itself especially vulnerable in Madanriting where it has its stations and close to the civilian population where availability of drugs is a concern.

Although the actual figures of men in the Indian Army falling prey to drug addiction is not available, but officials say there are several instances of Defence personnel taking drugs.

The Madanriting area has a cosmopolitan population. With the civilian population giving on rent their houses to the Defence personnel, access to drug becomes easy.

The Meghalaya Government has been constantly fighting this menace and has formed special units, based on a direction of the Meghalaya High Court, to take on the drug mafias.

Every district has its own Anti-Narcotic Task Force. The Khasi Hills Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) has had some success in recent days, but only the middlemen were arrested in most cases, while the kingpins are still at large.

Apart from instances in the Army related to drug addiction, several school and college children have also taken to drugs due to its easy availability. Meanwhile, drugs are smuggled into the State capital from places like Manipur and Mizoram, and also from across Myanmar and in some cases Bangladesh.
