Drinking water to get priority in Badarpur

BADARPUR, April 12 � Top priority will be given on permanently solving the drinking water problem of Badarpur town, along with early completion of all half-done civic works of the town, promised Dipankar Roy Karmakar, the newly elected chairman of the BJP-led Badarpur Town Committee (BTC).

Karmakar opined as above at a recent interview with this correspondent soon after taking oath at the BTC office chamber. He also added that, �as the chairman of Badarpur Town Committee, my foremost duty is to remove the perennial drinking water problem of the taxpayers, besides addressing all the other burning civic problems of Badarpur town, for which the citizens are facing much trouble since a long time.

He said that he wished to develop a model Badarpur town, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi�s �Swachh Bharat Abhiyan�. Recalling the 21-point BJP election manifesto, he mentioned that all the welfare activities will be implemented in a well-planned and systematic manner along with the cooperation of the local citizens.

Among the development works planned to be executed, mention was made about a properly laid out drainage system, installation of adequate street lights in each lane and bylane of the town, provision of pure drinking water facility, construction of various roads and footpaths, construction of Badarpur Town Hall and children�s park, setting up of a new market, fixation of rickshaw fare, to construct a swimming pool, to include the names of the electorate of Badarpur Railway Colony and Railway Junction areas in the Badarpur Town Committee voters� lists, besides initiation of several other civic works in a gradual and systematic manner. Karmakar also informed that with adequate funds allotted by the Union Ministry of Urban Development, he hoped to change the face of Badarpur town.

Resolving to ameliorate the present plight of the haggard commuters, Karmakar said that hence, rickshaw pullers will not be allowed to fleece the passengers by charging excess fare. Only BTC-issued licence holder rickshaw pullers will be entitled to ply their rickshaws within the perimeter of the town, he claimed, that too, only by realising fare which has been fixed by the BTC authority, based on distance covered.

Replying to another question, the newly elected BTC chairman said that all possible steps will taken to keep the entire town clean and hygienic, including the Badarpur market. Efforts are also presently on to check the spread of diseases and epidemics, he said. Regarding this matter, the BTC authority has resolved to initiate a discussion with all the businessmen, leading citizens and all sections of people of the town, on how best to go about the job at hand.

Karmakar also disclosed that he planned to conduct a probe into allegations of funds� misuse by a section of the former Congress-led civic body.

Earlier, in an oath-taking function organised by the Karimganj district administration which was held at Badarpur Town Committee Office, Dipankar Roy Karmakar, commissioner of Ward No. 1, and Anita Baruah, commissioner of Ward No. 4, along with the commissioner of Ward No. 3, Rita Roy, were administered the oath of office as the chairman, vice chairman and commissioner respectively. Sitangshu Roy, the commissioner of Ward No. 2 also took oath and was selected as the Protem Speaker by the Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Sanjeev Gohain Baruah.

In the presence of a huge gathering, including leading citizens of Badarpur town, besides senior leaders of Badarpur and Karimganj BJP, the elected members took oath.

The Deputy Commissioner in his address explained the significance of the meeting and conveyed his greetings to all the elected commissioners of BTC. The DC appealed to all the elected commissioners along with BTC chairperson and vice chairman to render their duties and responsibilities with honestly for the overall welfare of the Badarpur-based citizens. He also assured that for the greater development of Badarpur town, the Karimganj district administration will always extend its hands of cooperation.

The newly-elected BTC chairman, vice chairman and ward commissioners in their address earnestly appealed to all for their help and cooperation for solving the perennial civic problems of the town.

Similarly, Sikha Sutradhar took oath as the chairperson of Karimganj Municipal Board, while the DC nominated Surajit Poddar as the Protem Speaker in another oath-taking ceremony held at the Karimganj Municipal Board Office where all the elected commissioners were administered the oath of office by the Protem Speaker under the presidentship of Karimganj ADC Arunabha Dey.
