DRDA official held on bribe charges

GUWAHATI, Oct 8 - The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing of the Assam Police today arrested Nandita Konwar, project director of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Kamrup (Metro) on charges of accepting bribe from a contractor for clearing bills.

Police sources told The Assam Tribune that Konwar was arrested under the provisions of Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Sources said that a contractor Upen Chetri lodged a complaint that Konwar was demanding bribe of 10 per cent for clearing the bills for construction of Arunodoi Path in the Durga Sarobar area of the city under the MP�s Local Area Development scheme. The total cost of the project was Rs 1.20 lakh and Konwar was demanding 10 per cent of the money.

Today the contractor went to the office of Konwar with the money and she was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, police said. Konwar is the daughter of former Bihar Governor Devananda Konwar, who was also a Minister in the State.
