Drama festival inside city buses

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 28 Theatre group Guernica will hold a seven-day drama festival from October 22 next inside the Guwahati city buses. To make this festival successful, the theatre group is organizing a workshop in the city from October 15.

The group has said in a statement here yesterday that the participants of the workshop would be writing the plays being enacted during the festival, besides directing them and performing their roles. National School of Drama (NSD) products Himangshu Prasad Das and Pranami Bora would supervise the workshop.

It needs mention here that Himangshu and Pranami initiated acting inside the Guwahati city buses on June 27, 2007, when they were NSD students with the play Aei Chaharar Romeo-Juliet. Many city bus passengers took part in the play without knowing that they were in fact performing in a play based on the plight of a jobless youth whose beloved had become quarrelsome because of the family pressure on her to get married.

After completing his stint in the NSD, Himangshu organised in 2009, another experiment on city bus plays. By this time the theatre group Guernica came into being. Himangshu organised a workshop. With the participants of this workshop, he staged under Guernicas banner, Bekar Romeor Atmakatha on February 16, 2009 inside the Guwahati city buses. On a single day, 105 shows of the play were enacted, said Himangshu.
