GUWAHATI, Dec 28 � Dr R Zaman, former Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Cooperation, has been appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of the country�s first Cooperative University, i.e., Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management, at Sivasagar.
Dr R Zaman is a gold medalist in Physics of Gauhati University and also a PhD in Economics, an official release said.
It may be noted that the establishment of Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management at Sivasagar is considered very significant as it heralded the introduction of cooperative management studies in the university level in the country. The declaration of the establishment of the university was made by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the budget speech on March 15, 2010, and later a budgetary provision of Rs 1 crore was made under Chief Minister�s Innovative Scheme.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi laid the foundation of the university on December 28, 2010.
It is noteworthy that the university is meant to offer courses on cooperative management and will also train existing manpower in both the government and the private sectors to manage the cooperative sector.
