Dr Hazarika turns 85

GUWAHATI, Sept 8 � People from different walks of life assembled under various platforms across the State to celebrate musical icon Dr Bhupen Hazarika's 84th birthday today.

In Guwahati too, a host of organizations including the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the Heritage North East organized programmes to mark the

occasion.

The AASU organized the function titled 'Uddipana' at the Dighalipukhuripaar this evening where a sizeable number of people, including students and artistes gathered. A birthday cake was also cut under the aegis of the student body. In the cultural function that followed, students representing as many as 36 educational institutes from across the State performed. Earlier, AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya addressed the gathering pointing out the maestro's contribution to the music world and social life in general.

The Heritage North East, which celebrated the occasion at the Vivekananda Kendra, also cut a giant cake to mark the occasion.

The Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam in association with Luitporia Sanskritik Gosthi also organized a function in the Rabindra Bhawan to celebrate Dr Hazarika's birthday.

The function was attended by Government officials besides a good number of fans of the former chairman of Sankeet Natak Akademy.

In Mumbai, Dr Hazarika observed the day in a low-key manner at his residence in company of family members, close friends and well-wishers.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also wished Dr Hazarika on his birthday and greeted him by sending him a letter through the officials and employees of Assam Bhawan, Mumbai.
