Dr Anwesa Mahanta keeps New York audience spellbound

GUWAHATI, Aug 22 - State�s distinguished Satriya dance exponent Dr Anwesa Mahanta, who is also a scholar in this form of performing art, kept the audience of New York spellbound with her performance recently.

Anwesa was invited by Navalman, a leading cultural institution, in its �Drive East, 2018� international dance festival, under the subtitle �An Immersive Experience into the World of Indian Classical Arts.�

According to a press release received here, Anwesa, in her 90-minute recital, presented Srimanta Sankaradeva�s compositions. She made her selections from the Bhagawata, the Kirtana-Ghosa and Bargeet of the Great Saint for her �abhinaya.� The audience packed to its capacity in the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club auditorium accorded a standing ovation to Anwesa after her 90-minute-long recital, which was interspersed with her interpretations on this great living performing art tradition of Assam.

The members of the emotionally-charged audience rose to the stage, hugged Anwesa and shed tears in response to her grace and powerful expressions revealed through her �abhinaya� numbers.

It is pertinent to mention here that Anwesa, a disciple of renowned Satriya Bayanacharya Ghanakanta Bora, was recently honoured with the Bharat Kala Ratna Award by the Navanittam Cultural Trust, India, a Kerala-based institution. Earlier, she was also honoured by the Sangeet Natak Akademi with the Yuva Puraskar. She has so far made several scintillating performances in various parts of India and abroad.
