Dont create communal tension in Assam over NRC: BJP to Cong, TMC

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Aug 3 - Accusing the Congress of adopting double standards on the NRC issue, the BJP today accused the opposition party of indulging in vote bank politics and acting against Assam and the Assamese people.

In recent days, both the central leadership of the Congress party and the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress have suddenly become very vocal on the issue of NRC. While everybody in Assam welcomed the NRC and contributed to a peaceful update of the Register, the Congress party time and again tried to disrupt the process. Even now many senior Congress leaders are making absurd statements regarding the NRC without having the minimum knowledge about the matter, State BJP general secretary and spokesperson Rupam Goswami said.

Goswami said that either the State leadership of the Congress party has failed to convey facts to the partys central leaders or it is deliberately adopting dual standards on the NRC issue to bring further complications to the update process.

Congress party lacks strong leadership. So their leaders speak in divergent voices. Following the NRC update process Congress is now worried of losing a large chunk of its traditional vote bank and that has led to worry within the party. It is a fact that the Congress has over the decades acted as patron of illegal immigrants for the sake of electoral returns, said Goswami.

The BJP leader also condemned the stand taken by TMC and its leader Mamata Banerjee on the NRC issue.

Goswami said that the 40 lakh people whose names have been left out the draft NRC would get adequate opportunity to file claims and have their names included in the final NRC. He said that the Supreme Court has issued guidelines and modalities for the entire process and the Central and State governments have also time and again reassured everybody about ensuring that no genuine Indian citizen is left out of the NRC.

What the TMC MPs and leaders did yesterday in Barak Valley, with the support and encouragement of the Congress party, is shameful. What the opportunist Congress party can do for the sake of power is very evident from MP Sushmita Devs comments. On the one hand, the Congress is cooperating with the TMC to destabilise the situation in Assam, while on the other hand some Congress leaders like Tarun Gogoi are trying to engage in a competition to take credit for the NRC. BJP condemns the divisive politics of Congress and TMC and we caution them not to try to create ethnic and communal tension in Assam, said Goswami.
