Domestic solid waste management device

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 4 With an aim to make the gateway to the North East clean, an entrepreneur of the State has come up with a domestic solid waste management device which will also ensure income generation as well for the users.

Conceptualised and designed by Sanjib Sabhapandit and supported by Utpal Das, this device Nirmal, has segregation chambers, crusher, shredder and compactor and according to Sabhapandit, the owner of the device stands to earn from sale of the wastes, in small amounts daily but handsomely in the long run.

The idea behind designing this device was to keep our environment clean. Guwahati is a happening city and it is our responsibility to keep it clean, said Sabhapandit. The bio manure that will be produced from the device will encourage gardening, organic cultivation and promote health.

Sabhapandit said proper domestic waste management is dependent on waste segregation, handling and processing and the device will ensure that domestic waste is segregated into several categories and is deposited in separate chambers.

The main purpose is to segregate the food waste, eatables etc., which create obnoxious smell, are a breeding ground of mosquitoes and flies, and are eyesores as poverty stricken people, rag pickers, dogs and crows feed on these, said Sabhapandit. The system provides for washing/cleaning food waste. It also segregates plastic/polythene which is non-biodegradable and facilitates recycling.

Soil waste (earth, stone etc), garden waste (grass, fencing etc), forest waste (tree branches, creepers etc), animal waste (shit, cow dung etc), building/construction waste (cement, concrete, porcelain, steel etc) are not included in the processing part of the device. These are to be handled separately, said Sabhapandit.

The shredder converts kitchen waste into small particles. These can be dried/kept buried in soil for better decomposition/mixed with soil and used as organic manure.
