DERGAON, April 18 - The Dergaon Kamal Dowerah (DKD) College Study Centre (0402) of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) received the Best Study Centre Award among the centres under Jorhat Regional Centre (37) of IGNOU for its outstanding service for development of open and distance learning (ODL) among the learners.

The award was formally received by the Coordinator of the centre, Dr Khireswar Loying at IGNOUs 30th convocation held at its Regional Centre (RC), i.e., at the Jorhat District Library auditorium on April 13. The centre was adjudged as the best among the 29 units scattered in 13 districts of Upper Assam under the RC.

The DKD College study centre is the second one in Assam and the first centre in Upper Assam which was established in 1989 under Guwahati RC (04) just after the establishment of IGNOU in 1985 under the initiative of the then Principal of the College, Nilopadma Phukan along with Dr Prabin Sarmah as its first Coordinator.

The DKD College centre which initially started with a few programmes, presently offers 40 IGNOU programmes. Under the active leadership of Coordinator Dr Khireswar Loying and support offered by the Assistant Coordinator Dr Parashmoni Thakur along with other staff as well as the Academic Counsellors, the centre has done well in the field of ODL.

In the meantime, the socially conscious section of people here have expressed satisfaction over the recognition accorded to the centre and therefore congratulated the Coordinator for his consistent efforts to improve the facility.

On being contacted, Coordinator Dr Loying attributed the achievement to the role played by the Principal of the college, Dr Ranjit Kumar Bordoloi, Assistant Coordinator, Academic Counsellors, staff as well as the learners. He acknowledged the outstanding contributions of the former Coordinators, namely Dr Prabin Sarmah, Late Harendra Nath Bora, Dr Porag Thakur and Gunindra Nath Sarmah in the proper growth and development of the centre.
