GUWAHATI, April 22 - With intermittent rainfall and a persistent cloudy weather raising fears of waterlogging in the city, the district administration has undertaken a drive to clean the drains on a war-footing.
Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu said cleaning of the drains has started in full swing.
�It has been observed that a good number of critical drainage network and systems are being encroached by individuals, etc, by way of construction. We have started removing all such structures. GMC will do the needful,� the DC said. He said any kind of structure blocking the drains will be evicted.
Officials in the administration said that severe waterlogging has been observed from Khanapara to Jorabat on National Highway 37 in recent times. �It is occurring only because of blockages of natural channels and several illegal encroachments along the highway on that stretch,� they said.
The DC has directed the circle officers of Dispur and Sonapur to take necessary steps to clear the drains and remove the encroachments within April 30. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been directed to provide all logistic support to the drive, while police will ensure that law and order is maintained.
He said the drive will cover the main arterial roads like GS Road, RG Baruah Road, VIP Road, etc.
In another order, the DC has directed the PWD to refurbish all the main roads in the city that are in depleted condition within May 15.
