Dissident activity hots up in Meghalaya

By Raju Das

SHILLONG, Jan 21 Meghalaya is headed for another possible change of guard with 22 dissident Congress legislators seeking to bring in former Chief Minister DD Lapang and show the exit door to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

Rebel Congress legislators say they want not just the Chief Minister's ouster, they also want the current AICC general seceratry in-charge Meghalaya, Luzinho Faleiro to go for being biased and undemoractic" in hearing their pleas.

We want Mabel Robello or Digvijay Singh to take charge of the party in Meghalaya. We would present our case to the AICC president. We have no confidence in Faleiro, a Congress legislator said on condition of annoymity.

The Congress yesterday held its Legislature Party meeting in which just 16 out of 28 legsialtors attended.

Both Sangma and Faleiro claimed that everything was fine with the party and those who abstained from the meeting had notified about their prior enegaments.

However, sources said that the Congress disidents would renew their demand to change Sangma soon.

Not just 12 who absatined from the meeting wants change there are altogether 22 who wants Sangma to go, Congress sources said.

Interstingly, presence of legislators, at the venue of CLP meeting, from the colaition partners like United Democratic Party and Hills State Democratic Party has already fuelled specualtion that hectic politicking was on.

In fact yesterday, sources said dissidents held their meeting simultenously at a seperate venue while the CLP meeting was being held at Hotel Pinewood.

There is no question of change and there is no dissidence in the party. Everyone must perfrom or perish; Faleiro said after the CLP meeting.

Meanwhile, Lapang is keeping his cards close to his heart and says he would abide by the High Commands decsion.

I would not want to say anything on this issue, Lapang said when asked about the present politcial crisis.
