Disgusted villagers plant paddy saplings on road

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Sept 10 - Disgusted with the apathy of the authorities to give them better roads, residents of Sewti village, recently planted paddy saplings on the NREGS road to Noni Gopal Das house via Kalibari to give vent to their annoyance on the pathetic state of affairs.

More than 200 families of the Sewti village under Katigorah constituency in Cachar district, mainly belonging to the scheduled caste community use the road as their solitary means of communication. But due to the worsening condition of the road in the rainy season, the residents, young and old are now a worried lot.

Is this a road or a paddy field, echoed Sujit Das, Ashim Das, Dipu Das and other natives as they informed that despite numerous appeals made before the Gaon Panchayat authorities and even before the local MLA, the road remained in a shambles.

Under MGNREGS-2015-16, the construction work of the road was inaugurated by Tarun Babu Sinha, AP member of the Gaon Panchayat. The estimated amount was Rs 26.40 lakh, said Pritish Kanti Das, former AP member. The residents have also raised fingers on the role of the local Panchayat president Seema Roy and GP secretary Nilotpal Chakraborty.

Further, the villagers have expressed resentment over the role of the elected representatives saying that the political leaders come only to seek votes during elections and forget once they are chosen to speak for the people. We had hopes on the new Government to give us better roads and reasons to smile. But with the way things are maintained, we are left with less hope and more disappointment, maintained Suma Das and Anima Das.

It may be mentioned that people of the village submitted a memorandum to the Cachar Deputy Commissioner drawing his attention towards their plight.
