Disgruntled students behind stir in NEIAH, says Director

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, March 18 - Director of North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homeopathy (NEIAH) Pradip K Goswami on Thursday said that a few disgruntled students are unwilling to enter into a discussion to resolve some of the issues before the Institute.

Addressing the media here, Goswami said that the students are agitating and not attending their classes demanding hostel and transport facilities. He, however, said that the Institute doesnt have hostel facility and proposals have been sent to Central Government for the construction of hostels.

An agreement has been signed with National Projects Construction Corporation Limited (NPCC) for the construction of the hostel at an estimated cost of Rs 56.03 crore. The technical bids of the tendering process for construction of the hostel have been completed. However, it would take another two years for the hostels to be completed, he said.

The Director said as the construction of the hostels would take time to be completed and so the institute has proposed to the students that they can stay in designated hostels outside the campus and a subsidy of Rs 2,000 would be provided.

However, the students have refused all the offers. On Thursday when I wanted to talk to them they shouted at me instead and are continuing their agitation without attending their classes, Goswami said.

He further said the problems with the students began when some of them were disallowed from sitting in their examination owing to poor attendance in their classes. These are some of the disgruntled students who are spearheading the agitation. The rest are innocent, the Director said.
