GUWAHATI, Aug 3 - A detailed discussion on the plastic hazards and their remedies was conducted by NGO The Pathfinders at Biraja Medhi Bhawan, Rukminigaon on Sunday. The public meeting, headed by Kinaram Das, known social worker, was attended by over 100 people.

A press release issued by the NGO stated here today that the outcry against the rampant use of cheap plastics, especially polythene bags has become stronger in the recent years but the problem remains prominent. Plastic waste has been known to cause various diseases and pollute the environment. This calls for small but significant steps towards the solution of this hazard.

In the meeting, the NGO decided to take the initiative to purchase and place garbage bins in association with the local people for proper disposal of cheap and harmful forms of plastic. It will also take steps to spread this message in Rukminigaon locality.

The discussion was carried out under the guidance of Dr Nirmal Kumar Choudhury, retired Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University and also a subject expert. The harmful affects of cheap plastic waste, especially polythene were discussed in the meeting.

It has been observed that a considerable portion of the educated population is aware of the imminent dangers associated with the indiscriminate use of polythene carry bags and other cheap forms, like disposable utensils and beverage bottles. However, we have failed to take any effective step to reduce the usage of such plastics. Keeping this fact in mind, the members of the meeting decided to take these steps to reduce the use of polythene bags and dispose them of at assigned garbage bins, added the statement.
