Discourse on herbal medicines organised

AMGURI, June 23 � �Almost 80% of the Indian population is dependent on herbal medicines� � commented Bheshaj Ratna Dr Gunaram Khanikar, an internationally well-known specialist in herbal medicines, in a discourse �Atmasohayak Got, Bonoushad Aru Jivan� recently organised jointly by the Amguri Development Block and �Amguri Prayas�, the best voluntary social organisation of 2009 under Sivasagar district. The discourse aimed at identifying the herbal plants, vegetables and their application in healing diseases and their conservation and awareness among different self-help groups.

The invitees were welcomed by the BDO of the block, Utpal Doley. Jatindra Lahkar, DC, Sivasagar district, inaugurated the discourse. Addressing the audience, Dr Gunaram Khanikar said, �Health is dependent on food and therefore, we should be aware about the need to preserve our local vegetables and fruits and should consume them�. It may be mentioned here that Dr Khanikar has prepared many herbal medicines which have helped in healing many patients.

The discourse was followed by a programme called �Kabir Mahamilon� where poets like Dr Soumarjyoti Mahanta, Dr Manjit Gogoi and many other joined. In that programme, the money sanction letters to the beneficiaries of 11 self-help groups under �Swarnajayanti Gramya Swarojgar Yoyana-2011-12� were formally distributed.
