GUWAHATI, Jan 13 - In view of the uruka celebrations, the Directorate of Fisheries will set up stalls to sell fish in the city tomorrow. The stalls would be opened from 7 am in the morning.
The Directorate has picked several areas, including Chandmari, Noonmati, Wireless, Rupnagar and Maligaon. The number of stalls may increase depending on the demand.
The prices would be less compared to the retail market.
�Generally, the prices of the fish go up during such festivals. We hope to give the customers fish at at least Rs 50 less compared to the retail shops,� the official said.
Around 1,500 kg of fresh local fish are expected to be sold through the counters tomorrow. Several traditional varieties, including rou, bhokua, sitol, etc, would be available in the stalls.
�We are getting the stock from the cooperative societies. Basically, we will facilitate the societies to sell their harvest,� an official said.
A small inaugural function is being organized at Fishfed�s Rupnagar office in the morning.
Fishfed procures around 50,000 kgs of fish from its societies in the State for marketing every year.
There are 256 registered societies under Fishfed, with a farmer base of around 24,000 spread across Assam.
