Dima Hasao holds tourism carnival

GUWAHATI, Sept 27 - The World Tourism Day was celebrated in Dima Hasao with a lot of energy and fervour with the theme of the year � �One billion tourists, one billion opportunities�. This was stated in a press release.

On the occasion, a carnival was held with a day-long programme starting with an awareness rally from the Cultural Institute Hall in the district headquarters town of Haflong. The rally culminated at to the carnival venue in front of the boat house area near the Haflong Lake.

North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Chief Executive Member Debojeet Thaosen inaugurated the programme in the presence of various dignitaries. He also flagged off a bike rally on the occasion organized by the local bikers group called The Highlanders.

Thaosen in his address opined that though there are various tourists� locations in the district of Dima Hasao, �a lot needs to be done in this sector� for which he emphasized on proper road connectivity.

He also inaugurated a tourist information centre, initiated by tourism EM Laljoshua Biate, for the convenience of visitors to the district. The tourist information centre is located just near the Haflong Lake in front of the boathouse.

The day was celebrated with an aim to spread an awareness about the impact tourism has on countries and communities with a billion of opportunities.

The day-long programme also saw different events such as a colourful cultural performance by 13 different ethnic groups and non-tribals of the district, various competitions among the students such as quiz, live music, logo designing, wall painting, etc. There was a fireworks display in the later part of the evening. Food stalls of different communities also attracted the people visiting the carnival.

This event was organized by the Dima Hasao tourism department in collaboration with the Indian Army and a local NGO �Make a Difference�. Among the dignitaries who attended the programme were NCHAC executive members Kulendra Daulagupu, Nirmal Langthasa, Mahendra Kemprai, Laljoshua Biate, autonomous council members Tushar Kanti Deb, Tulsi Prasad Upadhyay, Brig SP Vishwasrao of 22 Sec Assam Rifles, the town committee vice chairman John Phoitong. Various government officials, teachers, parents and students also attended the event.
