The DIG was touring the sensitive areas of his range to prevent the incidents of violence in Kokrajhar from spreading to Dhubri district and after visiting Lakhiganj area in Bilasipara sub-division he was travelling to Sapatgram through Fakiragram when a crowd of around 150 people signalled his vehicle to stop at Udlabari.

The crowd raised several demands including imposition of Presidents rule, release of ten minority persons arrested by local police in connection with clashes between Bodos and minorities etc. Gradually the crowd swelled to around 500 and they blocked the road. For about a couple of hours efforts were made to persuade the crowd to vacate the road. But with instigation of a few persons, the mob started getting violent and started pelting stones at the police injuring the DIG and at least nine other police personnel.

The police had to open fire in the air to disperse the mob and one of the ringleaders involved in instigating the people was arrested.

When contacted, Kumar said that he received injuries on his back and leg and was treated in the Bilasipara Civil Hospital. He said all efforts were made to persuade the people to clear the road but they turned violent, forcing the police to open fire in the air. In the mob attack two police vehicles were damaged.

More than 35,000 people of both Bodo and Muslim communities have been sheltered in 37 relief camps as a result of the violence in Kokrajhar district and the death toll has also increased to 12.

Kokrajhar SP Jitmol Doley, said a fresh incident was averted last night by patrolling security personnel at Sarapara under Dotma Police Station where a group of armed miscreants indiscriminately opened fire in the area. However the security personnel retaliated forcing the miscreants to flee from the area.

Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner, Donald Gilfelon informed that the district administration has opened a number of control rooms with help lines at several places of the district while till now 10 relief camps have been raised in Kokrajhar and 27 in Gossaigaon sub-division.

He informed that curfew in Kokrajhar district has been now made operational between 6 pm and 6 am. He has also appealed to all sections of the people to maintain peace and not to spread rumors.

Meanwhile, violence broke out in Chirang district with the killing of a carpenter identified as Gopal Das at the residence of Kokrajhar MP, SK Biswmutiary in Basugaon area on Saturday noon by some miscreants.

Today around 12-30 pm some miscreants set a Tatamobile vehicle on fire and allegedly abducted three persons including the driver at Kasibari near Gorubhasa under Basugaon PS. In another incident four miscreants attacked an auto driver identified as Jahiruddin Mandal with sharp weapons near Samthaibari this afternoon. Somehow the driver escaped and was rescued by police.

In the afternoon hours today at Mongolian Bazar under Bijni PS two persons were hacked to death. The victims were identified as Nur Islam and Nur Hussain.

Our Staff Reporter adds in Guwahati: The Assam Government has sought additional forces from the Centre to deal with the situation in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area.

In a statement here, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that additional forces have already been rushed to Kokrajhar and more forces would be sent there soon. He said that Transport Minister Chandan Brahma is camping in Kokrajhar, while, two other ministers, Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dr Nazrul Islam have been directed to rush to Kokrajhar to monitor the situation.

The Chief Minister appealed to all sections of people to maintain peace and not to believe in rumours. He also said that the police and security forces have been directed to take strict action against all miscreants involved in the clashes.
