Dhiren Baruah honoured on 88th birthday

GUWAHATI, Dec 20 - Veteran social activist and the Chairman of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, Dhiren Baruah was honoured with the �Lokahitaishi� title in recognition of his long and selfless fight for the Guwahati city and its people, by the Baghorbori Asomi Mahila Samaj. The title was bestowed on him on his 88th birthday on Friday.

A number of people gathered at his Ambari-Lamb Road residence here to felicitate him and wish him a long and healthy life.

Members of several other organisations, including Dr Bhupen Hazarika Foundation, Kamrup Natya Samity, Pragati Shilpi Sangha, Assam, Pub Guwahati and Uzanbazar Public Durga Puja committees, Latashil Ganesh Mandir Committee, Machhkhowa Udyan Committee, Unnayan committees of North Guwahati, Hatigaon, Rihabari, Chhatribari and Kharghuli, among others, were present on the occasion.

Senior advocate and artiste Dilip Hazarika remembered his long association with Baruah and lauded him for his spirited efforts to raise the voice of the people. Social activist Radha Bora, Kailash Sarma, advocates Bijan Mahajan and Satyen Deka, among others, spoke on the occasion. In the meeting, Dr Anjanjyoti Choudhury presented two songs of Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Speaking on the occasion, Dhiren Baruah said he would continue to work for the people without making any compromise. �I have always tried to complete whatever work I take in my hands. I have never feared criticism coming in my way; rather I take it positively,� he added.
