Dharna in Sivasagar over eviction

By A Correspondent

SIVASAGAR, March 27 People who were evicted to requisition their land for establishing a cooperative university, first of its kind in India, staged a dharma in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here.

Over 200 evicted cultivators under the banner of the Sivasagar district unit of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and Demow Pathar Krishak Sabha took out a rally shouting slogans like We will give blood not our land, Land belongs to those who posses the hoe, Provide government jobs to family members of Ratneswar Bora who committed suicide for evicting him and requisitioning his land in Demow Pathar.

Working president Magnath Chetia and the joint secretary Raju Gogoi told this Correspondent that they have submitted a four-point memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner to redress their demands. They said that the 1,275 bighas of land in Salaguri Mouza, which have already been cultivated, is the livelihood of 500 cultivator families since 1967. They have also been paying revenues to the government, they added.

It seems like the cultivators are in a mood to give away their land for the construction of a university.
